The 4th Energy Smart Philippines highlights the growing partnership of the European Union (EU) and the Philippines in promoting a sustainable energy future for the Philippines. The EU has been active for many years in supporting the Philippines in engaging public and private stakeholders towards formulating and implementing policies and programs that bring forth increased efficiency in the use of energy and in accelerating the utilization of renewable energy technologies in order to secure a sustainable energy future for the Philippines. In this regard, the EU has earmarked EUR 190 million from its cooperation budget of EUR 325 million to the energy sector for the period 2014-2020.
The EU in partnership with the Department of Energy (DOE) launched the ASEP or Access to Sustainable Energy Programme with a Php3 billion grant (approximately EUR 57 million) to help the government achieve its rural electrification targets by means of energy efficiency and renewable energy. ASEP support is delivered through 3 components: (1.) Technical assistance and capacity building for reform (EUR 7.3 million); (2.) Investment support administered by the World Bank (EUR 29 million); and (3.) Call for Proposals for Pro-Poor and Climate Resilient innovative Energy Solutions (EUR 21 million)
The EU is also supporting the Philippines through the Switch Asia Program in order to drive the switch to the use of High Efficiency Motors (HEMs) in key high energy consuming industries. This program is offering technical assistance to the private and government sectors by implementing market transforming activities and creating an eco-system that will help drive change and facilitate the adoption of energy efficiency measures by industries and that will contribute to the enhancement of the country’s industrial competitiveness.
The EU also supports activities that bring mutually beneficial green business opportunities to EU and Philippines enterprises through the EU Business Avenues (EUBA) Program. Through the EUBA program, technical and financial support is given to EU enterprises that are keen on creating business partnerships with Philippine and other Asian companies in the green energy sector. The EU is supporting the organization of an EU Business Mission on Green Energy that will visit the Philippines for business matching opportunities during this event.
26 – 27 October 2017Shangri-La at the Fort, 30th Street corner 5th Avenue,
According to the Philippine’s Department of Energy, renewable energy resources contributed the highest share (68.1%) of the indigenous energy supply mix. Among the renewables, geothermal provided the biggest share of 53.2% of the RE supply mix. This is followed by biomass at 33.3% and hydro at 12.1%.
With the country’s aim to increase capacity of green energy from 6.63 gigawatts (GW) in 2015 to 15.30 GW in 2030, through its National Renewable Energy Program (NREP), there is great market potential for European technologies and solutions.
The sixth business mission under the EU Business Avenues in South East Asia programme, Green Energy Technologies, will take selected European companies to Singapore and Philippines from 23 to 27 October 2017.
40 European companies will be traveling to Manila for two days of pre-arranged meetings and exhibition from 26 to 27 October 2017, co-locating with Energy Smart Philippines 2017.
